Medically reviewed by Dr. Prashant Amrutkar, M.D., PhD Scholar (Panchakarma), 15+ years · Updated 22 September 2026

  • A fissure is a small tear at the anal opening. It gives sharp, cutting pain while passing stool, with a streak of bright blood.
  • Ayurvedic Medicine works on two fronts: the local tear, and the hard stool and weak Agni behind it.
  • Seen at the Monday Digestive and Anorectal OPD. Full Panchakarma at Ghorpadi and Hadapsar.
  • Bleeding is examined before it is managed. Some causes of rectal bleeding are serious and need a surgeon first.

Which Ayurvedic Medicines Are Used for Anal Fissure

Classical practice draws on a small, well-defined group, and the doctor selects from it after examining you. Nothing below is a prescription.

  • Jatyadi Ghrita or Jatyadi Taila, applied locally. The classical wound preparation for a tear at the anal verge.
  • Yashtimadhu preparations, used locally where burning and irritation dominate.
  • Triphala, to keep the stool soft so the tear stops reopening. Dose and timing are set for you, not taken from a label.
  • Panchavalkala or Triphala decoction, used warm as a sitz soak rather than taken internally.
  • Agni-correcting internal medicine, chosen for your digestion, because constipation drives the whole problem.

Over-the-counter laxatives loosen one motion and leave the pattern untouched, so the tear reopens with the next hard stool.

Panchakarma for Anal Fissure: Matra Basti and Avagaha Sweda

Two procedures anchor the plan. Avagaha Sweda is a sitting soak in warm medicated decoction. It eases the anal spasm that holds the tear open, usually in the first one to two weeks. Matra Basti is a small-volume Anuvasana Basti with warm medicated oil. It softens the stool and settles Vata at its seat, which is what stops the cycle repeating.

Both are performed at our Ghorpadi and Manjri Bk, Hadapsar branches. A conservative course commonly runs four to eight weeks. Outcomes vary by individual.

When a Surgeon Needs to See It First

Rectal bleeding has several causes, not all of them a fissure. See a physician or surgeon first if you are over 45 with new bleeding, if blood is mixed into the stool or the stool is black, or if bleeding comes with weight loss, anaemia or a change in bowel habit. A painful swelling with pus or fever is an abscess and needs a surgeon the same day. A fissure not healed in eight weeks is chronic and needs a specialist opinion alongside Ayurvedic care. Any ointment your surgeon has prescribed continues exactly as directed.

Where to Consult in Pune

The Monday Digestive and Anorectal OPD covers fissure and piles. Ghorpadi and Manjri Bk, Hadapsar see patients in person with full Panchakarma. Wagholi consults in person, with procedures referred there. Kharadi and Viman Nagar consult online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Ayurvedic medicine works for a fissure?
There is no single one. A local application such as Jatyadi Ghrita, something to keep the stool soft, and an Agni-correcting internal medicine are used together, chosen after examination.

Does a fissure need surgery?
Most recent fissures do not. One still present after eight weeks is chronic, and a surgeon's opinion joins the plan.

How soon does the pain settle?
The spasm often eases within one to two weeks of a soft daily stool and sitz soaks. The full course commonly runs four to eight weeks.
