What Is Suvarnaprashan? A Parents' Guide

The classical Ayurvedic practice for children in plain words: what goes into it, which ages it suits, and when it is given.

Key Takeaways
Suvarnaprashan is purified gold (Swarna Bhasma) mixed with ghee, honey and Medhya herbs such as Brahmi and Shankhpushpi.
Ayurveda describes it as supporting a child's Bala (strength), Agni (digestion), Medha (intellect) and Vyadhikshamatva (resistance to illness).
It is traditionally given from birth to 16 years, once a month on the Pushya Nakshatra date, after the doctor checks the child.
Not a vaccine. Suvarnaprashan is a classical Ayurvedic practice for children. It does not replace any vaccine on your child's immunisation schedule. A child with fever, diarrhoea or an acute illness on the day waits for the next date, and the doctor checks every child before each dose.

Suvarnaprashan, also called Swarna Prashana, is one of the classical practices of children's Ayurveda, described by Acharya Kashyapa in the Kashyapa Samhita. At AMRUT AYU CARE™ our M.D. Ayurveda doctors check each child and give it on Pushya Nakshatra dates. This page explains the basics. For the full 2026 calendar, see the dates page linked below. What Suvarnaprashan Is

Suvarna means gold and Prashana means taking by mouth. The preparation combines Swarna Bhasma, purified gold prepared by classical Rasashastra methods, with cow ghee, honey and herbs that Ayurveda calls Medhya, meaning they support the mind.

Kashyapa Samhita lists it among the practices for children's health. Families often treat it as a monthly ritual, timed to the Pushya Nakshatra.

What Ayurveda Says It Supports

Bala
Physical strength and healthy growth.
Agni
Appetite and digestion.
Medha
Memory, attention and learning.
Vyadhikshamatva
The body's own resistance to illness.
