The Kerala tradition

What Is Keraliya Panchakarma?

Kerala physicians refined the classical oil and heat therapies into a set of procedures now known across the world as Keraliya Panchakarma.

Classical Panchakarma
Shastriya Panchakarma
The five cleansing procedures: Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana, each preceded by Snehana (oleation) and Svedana (sudation).
Keraliya Panchakarma
Kerala forms
Pouring, bolus and paste therapies that oleate and warm the body or head, such as Shirodhara, Kizhi and Pizhichil.
How they connect
One system, not two
Each Keraliya therapy is an evolved form of Snehana or Svedana. It is used on its own, or as preparation before Virechana or Basti, as the doctor decides.

How Keraliya Panchakarma Corresponds to Classical Panchakarma

Every Keraliya therapy maps to a procedure already described in the classical texts. This is why Ayurveda treats them as one system.

Snigdha means unctuous (with oil), Ruksha means dry, and Sankara Sveda is sudation with a warm bolus. Thalapothichil and Shirodhara both belong to Murdhni Taila, the classical group of oil therapies for the head.

How a Keraliya Therapy Plan Works

1Consultation
Assessment
The doctor reads your Prakriti (constitution), the condition and its duration, then chooses the therapy, the oil or medium, local or full body, and the number of sittings.
2Each sitting
The therapy
Trained therapists give the session at the clinic. Abhyanga precedes Navarakizhi and Elakizhi; Podikizhi is given dry. The doctor reviews your response through the course.
3After the session
Rest and diet
A short rest, a warm bath after the interval the doctor advises, and light, warm food on therapy days help the body settle.

Course length: set after assessment. There is no fixed number of sittings that applies to everyone, and therapy selection never follows a fixed package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Keraliya Panchakarma?

Keraliya Panchakarma is the group of Kerala-style Ayurvedic therapies that includes Dhara Kalpa (Shirodhara), Pinda Sveda (Kizhi), Kaya Seka (Pizhichil), Anna Lepa (Njavarakizhi) and Thalapothichil. Each one is an evolved form of Snehana (oleation) or Svedana (sudation), the preparatory steps of classical Panchakarma.

Is Keraliya Panchakarma different from classical Panchakarma?

No. Classical (Shastriya) Panchakarma is the five cleansing procedures, each preceded by Snehana and Svedana. Keraliya therapies are refined forms of those preparatory steps, so the two belong to one system. A Keraliya therapy is given on its own or as preparation before Virechana or Basti, as the doctor decides.

How much does Keraliya Panchakarma cost in Pune?

At AMRUT AYU CARE™, Keraliya therapies cost ₹800 to ₹2,500 per sitting. For example, Shirodhara with oil is ₹1,500, full-body Navarakizhi is ₹2,000 and full-body Pizhichil is ₹2,500. A doctor consultation costs ₹300.

What is the difference between Navarakizhi, Elakizhi and Podikizhi?

All three are Pinda Sveda, sudation with a warm bolus. Navarakizhi uses Shashtika Shali rice cooked in milk and Bala decoction, Elakizhi uses herbal leaves, and both follow Abhyanga. Podikizhi uses dry herbal powders and is given without Abhyanga.

Who should not have a Keraliya therapy?

Keraliya therapies are not given during fever, acute swelling or skin infection over the area, or pregnancy, unless the doctor clears it. Sudden weakness on one side, numbness with loss of bladder control, or a sudden severe headache need emergency medical care first.

Which AMRUT AYU CARE™ branch offers Keraliya Panchakarma?

Keraliya therapies are given at our two full-Panchakarma branches: Ghorpadi (Main), Solace Park, BT Kawade Road, and Manjri Bk, Hadapsar. Assessment is available at any of our 5 Pune branches, online or in person, before the therapy is scheduled at one of these two.
