Leech Therapy for Acne and Pimples: Ayurvedic Treatment in Pune

How leech therapy works, who it suits, what a sitting on the face involves, the side effects to know about, and how it fits into Ayurvedic acne care.

Key Takeaways
Leech therapy places a few medicinal leeches on inflamed acne for a short sitting. The leech draws a small amount of blood and releases saliva that contains anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory substances.
Ayurveda reads inflamed acne, Yuvanpidika, as Pitta and vitiated Rakta (blood) with Kapha blocking the pores. Leech therapy is the classical local measure for Pitta and Rakta in a lesion.
It suits red, swollen, painful or pus-filled acne in patients the doctor finds suitable, at any age with consent. It is not a routine for blackheads, mild acne, or scars, and it never works alone without diet and Ayurvedic Medicine.
Expect small bite marks that ooze for some hours and fade over days to weeks. Infection, prolonged bleeding and allergy are uncommon and real, which is why screening and hygiene matter.
Each leech is used once, for one patient. Isotretinoin, antibiotics and dermatology creams continue exactly as directed, and the doctor must know about them.
Read this first. Leech therapy is not done if you take blood thinners or daily aspirin, have a bleeding disorder, anaemia, uncontrolled diabetes, low immunity, a tendency to keloid scars, an active skin infection at the site, or are pregnant. Tell the doctor if you take isotretinoin, because it makes skin fragile. Severe, painful nodular or cystic acne, acne with fever, or acne that is scarring quickly needs a dermatologist's care as well. Never let anyone apply leeches that have been used on another person.

Leech therapy for acne and pimples in Pune, at AMRUT AYU CARE™. Ayurveda calls it Jalaukavacharana, a form of Raktamokshana, and has used medicinal leeches for inflamed, pus-filled skin lesions for centuries. At our Tuesday Skin, Hair and Cosmetic OPD it is one part of acne care, alongside Ayurvedic Medicine and diet, and only after the doctor has examined your skin. This page explains how it works, what to expect on the face, and the side effects, plainly. Call 8698282507.

Acne on the cheek and medicinal leeches used in Ayurvedic leech therapy (Jalaukavacharana)
The classical logic

How Does Leech Therapy Work for Acne?

A medicinal leech attaches with a tiny three-pointed bite, draws a few millilitres of blood, and drops off by itself once full. While it feeds, its saliva enters the tissue. That saliva contains hirudin, which stops blood clotting locally, along with substances that widen small vessels and calm inflammation. The effect is local decongestion: a swollen, tense, red lesion is drained of stagnant blood and the pressure in it falls.

Ayurveda explains the same event in its own terms. Inflamed acne is Pitta and vitiated Rakta lodged in the skin of the face, with Kapha and oil blocking the pore. Jalaukavacharana, leech application, is described in the classical texts as the gentlest form of Raktamokshana, therapeutic bloodletting, and the one suited to Pitta conditions and to delicate areas. It removes the local excess; diet and Ayurvedic Medicine address why it keeps forming.

Published evidence is limited to small studies and case reports, mostly in Ayurvedic journals. We present leech therapy as a traditional procedure with a plausible local action, not as a proven stand-alone acne treatment.

Fit check

Who Leech Therapy for Pimples Suits

The doctor decides after examining the skin and taking a medical history. These are the usual patterns.

Inflamed, pus-filled acne
Red, swollen, painful papules and pustules on the cheeks, jawline or back that keep returning, in patients otherwise fit for the procedure. A parent or guardian consents for a minor.
A few stubborn lesions
One or two large, tense lesions that have not settled, where local decongestion is the aim.
Not for mild acne or scars
Blackheads, whiteheads and mild acne do well with Ayurvedic Medicine, diet and skin care alone. Leeches do not remove old scars or pigmentation.
Not for everyone
People on blood thinners, with anaemia, bleeding disorders, diabetes that is not controlled, keloid tendency, or in pregnancy are advised against it.
Sitting by sitting

What Happens in a Sitting on the Face

Assessment and screening
Skin examination, medical history, current medicines, and a haemoglobin or clotting test where the doctor asks for one. You are told plainly what marks to expect before you decide.
Preparation
The skin is cleaned with plain water. No soap, perfume or cream, because leeches do not attach to scented skin. Fresh, single-use medicinal leeches are activated in turmeric water.
Application
A few leeches are placed on the chosen lesions. Most people feel a brief pinch, then little else, because leech saliva has a mild numbing action. Each leech feeds for roughly 20 to 45 minutes and drops off by itself. It is never pulled off.
Aftercare at the clinic
The bite sites are cleaned and dressed with turmeric or a medicated dressing. Oozing from the bites is expected and continues for some hours; a pressure dressing controls it. The used leeches are disposed of as medical waste.
The course
Sittings are spaced about a week or more apart, and the number depends on how the skin responds. Ayurvedic Medicine and diet run throughout, and they decide whether the acne stays settled.
Leech therapy is done in person at our Ghorpadi, Manjri Bk, Hadapsar and Wagholi branches. Kharadi and Viman Nagar consult online, with sittings scheduled at one of the three.
Safety first

Leech Therapy Side Effects and Marks on the Face

Every bite leaves a small Y-shaped mark. On the face this matters, and you deserve to know it before the sitting. The marks ooze for some hours, scab, and fade over days to a few weeks in most people. People who form dark marks or raised scars easily are advised against facial application.

Itching around the bites for a few days is common. Uncommon problems are prolonged bleeding, a local infection, and allergy to leech saliva. They are the reason for screening, for single-use leeches, and for clean aftercare. Contact the clinic or a physician the same day for bleeding that soaks through dressings after several hours, spreading redness, pus, fever, or swelling of the face.

At home: keep the dressing on as advised, do not scratch or pick the scabs, avoid make-up, facials, steam and swimming until the bites have closed, and use sunscreen afterwards, because fresh marks darken in the sun.

The full plan

Leech Therapy as Part of Ayurvedic Acne Care

Acne forms from the inside: oil production, hormones, digestion, sleep and stress. A local procedure does not change those. Care at the OPD therefore starts with Ayurvedic Medicine matched to your Dosha pattern, a Pitta and Kapha settling diet with less fried, sweet, sour and dairy-heavy food, a regular bowel, and simple skin care. Leech therapy is added only where inflamed lesions call for it.

Ayurvedic care runs alongside your dermatologist's. Isotretinoin, antibiotics, hormonal treatment and prescribed creams continue exactly as directed, and any change is made with the doctor who prescribed them.

Responses differ widely. Some people see inflamed lesions flatten within days of a sitting; others notice little change. We do not publish before-and-after photographs, and no result is promised. This page is educational and not a substitute for a consultation.

Questions patients ask

Frequently Asked Questions

Is leech therapy good for acne?

It is a traditional option for inflamed, pus-filled acne in patients the doctor finds suitable, as one part of a plan that includes Ayurvedic Medicine and diet. It is not needed for mild acne, and research on it is limited to small studies. The doctor advises after examining your skin.

Does leech therapy work for pimples on the face?

It reduces local congestion in inflamed lesions for some people. It also leaves small bite marks on the face that take days to weeks to fade, so the decision is made lesion by lesion, with your consent.

What are the benefits of leech therapy for skin?

Local decongestion of swollen, inflamed lesions, from the blood drawn and from the anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory substances in leech saliva. We do not claim it purifies the whole bloodstream, builds collagen or prevents future breakouts.

Is leech therapy painful?

Most people feel a brief pinch as the leech attaches, then little else. The bites itch for a few days afterwards.

What are the side effects of leech therapy?

Expected: small bite marks, oozing for some hours, itching. Uncommon: prolonged bleeding, local infection, allergy, and lasting dark marks or scars in people prone to them. Screening, single-use leeches and clean aftercare keep the risk low.

How many sittings are needed?

It depends on how many inflamed lesions there are and how the skin responds. The doctor reviews after each sitting, and sittings are spaced about a week or more apart.

What is the price of leech therapy on the face?

Leech therapy costs Rs 500 per leech, per sitting. The total depends on the number of leeches and sittings advised, since each leech is used once. It is confirmed at the consultation, before anything starts. Call or WhatsApp 8698282507 to ask.

Are the leeches reused?

No. Each medicinal leech is used once, for one patient, and then disposed of as medical waste. Never accept therapy with reused leeches anywhere.

Do I continue my dermatologist's medicines?

Yes. Every prescription continues exactly as directed. Tell the doctor about isotretinoin, antibiotics, blood thinners and aspirin in particular, because they affect whether the procedure is suitable.
