Chronic Cough Ayurvedic Care in Pune: A Doctor's Guide

What a cough that outlasts every course of medicine usually means, when it needs a physician first, and where Ayurvedic care fits.

Key Takeaways
A cough beyond three weeks needs a physician's evaluation and a chest X-ray first. Beyond eight weeks, doctors call it chronic. Ayurvedic care begins after that check, not instead of it.
Most long coughs trace to a few patterns: post-nasal drip, airway sensitivity or asthma, acid reflux, a cough left behind by an infection, or smoke and dust exposure.
Ayurveda names cough Kasa and reads a stubborn one through the Dosha behind it and through Agni, the digestive fire, which is why reflux and digestion are asked about at the assessment.
Care at AMRUT AYU CARE combines Ayurvedic Medicine, Pathya diet, Nasya and steam, and a seasonal Vamana only for suitable adults with a recurrent Kapha-type cough.
Prescribed inhalers, antibiotics and reflux medicines continue exactly as directed. Whether an antibiotic is needed is your physician's decision, never ours to override.
Read this first. Cough with blood, high fever, chest pain, breathlessness at rest, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or a cough in a smoker over 40 that has changed needs a physician's evaluation and a chest X-ray first, not an Ayurvedic OPD booking. Suspected tuberculosis is diagnosed and treated free under the national programme (NTEP); Ayurvedic care begins only after that course is complete. Never stop a prescribed inhaler, antibiotic or reflux medicine on your own.

A cough that returns after every course of medicine has a reason behind it. This guide from AMRUT AYU CARE™, Pune, explains what makes a cough chronic, the common patterns behind it, and how the Saturday OPD manages a lingering cough with Ayurvedic Medicine, diet and selected Panchakarma, alongside your physician's evaluation. When to worry

What Makes a Cough Chronic

A cough after a cold normally settles within three weeks. One that continues past three weeks is called subacute, and past eight weeks, chronic. The longer a cough runs, the less likely it is to be the original infection and the more likely it is to be one of a few well-known patterns.

The physician's job is to rule out the serious causes with an examination, a chest X-ray and, where needed, a breathing test. Once those are clear, the pattern behind the cough decides the care, and this is where the Ayurvedic assessment adds the most.

Post-nasal drip
Mucus from the nose and sinuses trickling down the throat, with throat clearing, a tickle and a cough that is worse lying down.
Airway sensitivity and asthma
A dry cough at night, with exercise or in cold air, sometimes with wheeze. Needs a breathing test and, where prescribed, an inhaler that continues.
Reflux cough
Acid rising from the stomach irritates the throat. Worse after meals and at night, often with sour taste or heartburn, sometimes with no acidity at all.
Post-infectious cough
A cough that outlasts a viral infection by weeks because the airway lining stays irritated. Common after monsoon and winter infections.
The Ayurvedic view

How Ayurveda Reads a Cough That Will Not Settle

Ayurveda calls cough Kasa and reads it through Prana Vaha Srotas, the respiratory channel, and the Dosha driving it. A dry, hacking night cough is Vataja Kasa. A cough with burning, yellow phlegm and sour taste is Pittaja Kasa, and it sits close to the reflux pattern above. A heavy morning cough with white phlegm is Kaphaja Kasa, and it sits close to post-nasal drip.

Ayurveda also links a stubborn cough to Agni, the digestive fire. Weak or erratic digestion produces Ama, a residue that clogs the channels and keeps the airway irritable. That is why the assessment asks about meals, acidity, sleep and bowel habit alongside the chest, and why diet is part of the plan from the first visit.

How care works

What Chronic Cough Care Includes

Physician's evaluation first
Examination, chest X-ray and any breathing or blood tests the physician advises. Bring every report and every current medicine to the Ayurvedic assessment.
Assessment at the Saturday OPD
History of the cough, digestion, allergies, sleep, workplace exposure and smoking. The Dosha pattern and the Agni state decide the plan.
Ayurvedic Medicine
Classical formulations matched to the pattern, such as Sitopaladi-type and Talisadi-type preparations, with Deepana and Pachana where digestion and reflux are involved.
Pathya diet and routine
Warm water, warm freshly cooked meals, an early light dinner, and less cold drinks, curd, banana and fried food. Head raised at night where reflux is the pattern.
Nasya and steam
Medicated nasal drops and steam inhalation for post-nasal drip and congestion, taught for home use.
Seasonal Vamana where suitable
For adults with a recurrent Kapha-type cough, a Vasanta-season Vamana is considered after assessment, at Ghorpadi or Manjri Bk, Hadapsar. Not for children, and not for everyone.
Full Panchakarma, including Vamana, runs at our Ghorpadi and Manjri Bk, Hadapsar branches. Wagholi offers in-person consultation. Kharadi and Viman Nagar consult online.

About Antibiotics and Your Prescriptions

Whether a cough needs an antibiotic is a decision for the physician who examines you, based on the cause. Viral and post-infectious coughs usually do not need one; a bacterial infection does. Ayurvedic care never replaces that judgement, and we do not advise anyone to skip or stop a prescribed antibiotic.

Inhalers for asthma, reflux medicines and any other prescription continue exactly as directed. Ayurvedic care runs alongside them, and any change to a prescription is made with the doctor who wrote it. If a report points to pneumonia, tuberculosis or another lung condition, the physician routes you to the right specialist first.

A post-infectious or reflux-linked cough often eases over two to four weeks of Ayurvedic Medicine and diet. Recurrent and seasonal cough needs longer, with periodic review. Outcomes vary by individual, and no result is promised. This page is educational and not a substitute for a consultation.
Questions patients ask

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a cough called chronic?

Past three weeks it is subacute and needs a physician's evaluation. Past eight weeks it is chronic. Either way, the check comes first and Ayurvedic care follows it.

Do I need a chest X-ray before Ayurvedic care?

Yes, for any cough past three weeks, and immediately for cough with blood, fever, chest pain or breathlessness. Bring the report to the assessment.

Does acidity cause a long cough?

Yes. Acid rising from the stomach irritates the throat and airway, often at night. Ayurveda reads this as a Pitta pattern with weak Agni, and diet and Ayurvedic Medicine for digestion are part of the plan.

Does Ayurvedic care replace my antibiotic or inhaler?

No. Whether an antibiotic is needed is your physician's decision. Inhalers and every other prescription continue exactly as directed, and Ayurvedic care runs alongside them.

What about a smoker's cough?

Stopping smoking is the first step, and a changed cough in a smoker needs a physician's evaluation without delay. Once that is done, Ayurvedic care supports the airway and digestion while you quit.

What about tuberculosis?

No. Suspected or active TB is diagnosed and treated free of cost under the national programme, and that course must be completed. AMRUT AYU CARE offers supportive care for recovery after treatment, for strength, appetite and digestion.

Is this care suitable for children?

Children are assessed by the doctor, and care is limited to gentle Ayurvedic Medicine, diet and steam. Panchakarma procedures such as Vamana are not done in children.

What does chronic cough care cost?

The cost follows the plan: consultation, Ayurvedic Medicine, and any procedure advised. It is confirmed at the consultation, before anything starts.
