Key Takeaways
  • Leech therapy at AMRUT AYU CARE costs Rs 500 per leech, per sitting. The number of leeches and sittings depends on the condition and the area, and is confirmed at the consultation before anything starts.
  • It is done in person at Ghorpadi (Main) and Manjri Bk, Hadapsar. Wagholi offers in-person consultation. Kharadi and Viman Nagar consult online.
  • Ayurveda uses it for local Pitta and Rakta congestion: inflamed skin lesions, scalp inflammation, varicose veins and swollen, painful joints, as one part of a wider plan.
  • Every leech is used once, for one patient. Bites ooze for some hours, which is expected, and leave small marks that fade over weeks.
  • It is not done for people on blood thinners, with bleeding disorders, severe anaemia, fever or active infection, low immunity, or in pregnancy.
Read this first. Leech therapy is not done if you take blood thinners or daily aspirin, have a bleeding disorder, severe anaemia, fever or an active infection, low blood pressure, low immunity, cancer under treatment, a known allergy to leech saliva, or are pregnant. Diabetes needs to be controlled and your physician needs to agree. Non-healing wounds, diabetic foot problems and blood clots in the veins stay under your physician or surgeon. Never accept therapy with leeches that have been used on another person.

Leech Therapy Cost in Pune

At AMRUT AYU CARE the charge is Rs 500 per leech, per sitting. A small, local problem needs two to four leeches. A larger area, such as varicose veins of the leg, needs more. The doctor tells you the number of leeches and the likely number of sittings at the consultation, so you know the cost before you decide.

The consultation and any Ayurvedic Medicine advised are charged separately. We accept cash, cards and UPI. Most health insurance policies in India do not cover leech therapy; we give itemised receipts if you wish to check with your insurer.

What Leech Therapy Is

A medicinal leech attaches with a tiny bite, draws a small amount of blood, and drops off by itself once full. While it feeds, its saliva releases hirudin, which stops clotting locally, and substances that widen small vessels and calm inflammation. The effect is local: a congested, swollen, inflamed area is decongested.

Ayurveda describes this as removing vitiated Rakta from the site, and recommends it for Pitta and Rakta conditions and for delicate areas where other forms of Raktamokshana are too strong. It is a local procedure. Diet and Ayurvedic Medicine address why the problem formed.

Where Leech Therapy Is Considered

The doctor decides after examining you and reviewing your medicines and reports. These are the usual situations.

Inflamed skin conditions
Inflamed acne, boils and abscesses, and selected patches of eczema or psoriasis, alongside internal medicines and diet.
Scalp inflammation and hair fall
Where scalp congestion and inflammation accompany hair fall, as part of a hair care plan.
Varicose veins
Heaviness, aching and skin changes from venous congestion in the legs, alongside compression and your vascular surgeon's advice.
Swollen, painful joints
Local swelling in osteoarthritis or a gout flare, alongside the main joint care plan.

The Procedure, Step by Step

1
Purvakarma: preparation
You are examined and screened against the contraindications, consent is taken and vitals are checked. The area is cleaned with plain warm water, and fresh medicinal leeches are activated in clean turmeric water.
2
Pradhanakarma: application
The leeches are placed on the chosen site. Most people feel a brief pinch, then little else. Each leech draws roughly 5 to 15 ml of blood over 20 to 45 minutes and detaches by itself. If it does not, a pinch of turmeric makes it let go. It is never pulled off.
3
Paschatkarma: aftercare
The bites are cleaned and dressed with a pressure bandage. Oozing for several hours is expected. You are given written care instructions and a number to call. Used leeches are disposed of as medical waste and never reused.
4
Follow-up
Sittings are usually spaced one to two weeks apart. The doctor reviews the response after each one and stops when the aim is met.
Leech therapy is performed at Ghorpadi (Main), BT Kawade Road and Manjri Bk, Hadapsar. Wagholi offers in-person consultation. Kharadi and Viman Nagar consult online, and patients from outside Pune consult online first, then travel for sittings.

Side Effects and Safety

Expected effects: oozing from the bites for several hours, itching for a few days, and small marks that fade over weeks. Arrange a companion for the journey home, and rest that day.

Uncommon problems: prolonged bleeding, a local wound infection, and allergy to leech saliva. Screening, single-use leeches and clean aftercare keep the risk low. Call the clinic or see a physician the same day for bleeding that soaks through dressings after several hours, spreading redness, pus, fever or dizziness.

Jalaukavacharana is part of classical Ayurveda and is practised legally in India by registered Ayurvedic doctors. Prescribed medicines continue exactly as directed, and the doctor must know about every one of them, blood thinners above all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of leech therapy in Pune?

At AMRUT AYU CARE it is Rs 500 per leech, per sitting. The total depends on the number of leeches and sittings advised, which the doctor confirms at the consultation before anything starts.

Is leech therapy available near me in Pune?

Sittings are done at Ghorpadi (Main), BT Kawade Road, and at Manjri Bk, Hadapsar. Wagholi offers in-person consultation, and Kharadi and Viman Nagar consult online. Call or WhatsApp 8698282507 to book.

I live elsewhere in Maharashtra. How does it work?

Start with an online consultation, so the doctor confirms that leech therapy suits you and plans the sittings. You then travel to Ghorpadi or Manjri Bk, Hadapsar for the sittings, which are usually one to two weeks apart.

Is leech therapy painful?

Most people feel a brief pinch as the leech attaches, then little else. The bites itch for a few days afterwards.

Is leech therapy safe?

It is a minor procedure with real risks: bleeding, infection and allergy. Screening for contraindications, single-use leeches and clean aftercare keep them uncommon. It is performed only by our M.D. Ayurveda doctors.

How many sittings are needed?

It depends on the condition and how you respond. The doctor reviews after each sitting and stops when the aim is met.

Are the leeches reused?

No. Each medicinal leech is used once, for one patient, and then disposed of as medical waste.

Do I continue my regular medicines?

Yes. Every prescription continues exactly as directed. Tell the doctor about all of them. Leech therapy is not done while you take a blood thinner unless the prescribing doctor agrees a plan.
