International Youth Day: Sleep and Screens in Pune

Today, 12 August 2026, International Youth Day 2026. AMRUT AYU CARE™ Ghorpadi on why sleep debt in ages 15 to 29 is a health problem, and how Ayurveda reads it. Call 8698282507. Wednesday, is our Sleep & Mental Health OPD.

  • Today's OPD: Wednesday Sleep & Mental Health, led by Dr. Prashant Amrutkar (M.D. Ayurveda, PhD Scholar in Panchakarma, 15+ years).
  • In focus: Anidra (insomnia), Chittodvega (anxiety) and Manasika Tanava (stress) in students and first-job professionals.
  • If you are having thoughts of self-harm: call Tele-MANAS on 14416. It is free and it answers 24 hours. Please do that before reading further.
  • Important: we never advise stopping a medicine a psychiatrist prescribed. Ayurvedic care runs alongside that treatment.
  • Booking: call 8698282507 for the Ghorpadi (Main) clinic at Solace Park on BT Kawade Road, opposite Kalashankar Bus Stop.

Why Youth Day and sleep belong on the same page

International Youth Day lands on our Sleep & Mental Health OPD this year. That is a coincidence worth using, because the single most common complaint we hear from patients under 30 is not pain or skin. It is sleep.

A 19-year-old says she cannot sleep before 2 AM. A 24-year-old two months into his first job says he is fine on five hours. Both have been told this is normal for their age.

Ayurveda has been clear about this for a long time

Classical Ayurveda lists Nidra, sleep, as one of the three Upastambha. These are the three sub-pillars that hold up health, standing beside Ahara (food) and Brahmacharya (disciplined living).

Remove one pillar and the structure does not collapse. It leans. Then it keeps leaning, quietly, for years. That is exactly what long-term sleep debt looks like in a young body.

Four patterns we see in the 15 to 29 group

  1. The delayed clock. Lights out at 1 AM, alarm at 7 AM, weekends spent catching up. The catching up never quite works, and Monday resets the debt.
  2. The bright screen at night. Phone held close in a dark room. The mind stays stimulated at the exact moment it needs to settle. In Ayurvedic terms, Prana Vaha Srotas stays active when it should be quietening.
  3. The exam or appraisal loop. Thoughts race the moment the light goes off. Ayurveda names this Chittodvega, and reads it as Rajas dominating a mind that needs Sattva to fall asleep.
  4. Morning heaviness. Eight hours in bed and still exhausted. Unrefreshing sleep points at digestion and Ama as often as it points at the mind, which is why we ask about dinner before we ask about worry.

How the Wednesday OPD works at Ghorpadi

The consultation begins with history, not medicine. We ask about sleep timing, meal timing, caffeine count, screen habits, the study or shift pattern, and what changed in the last six months.

From there, a plan usually combines:

  • Correction of sleep and meal timing first, before anything is prescribed
  • Classical Ayurvedic Medicine selected for the individual by an M.D. Ayurveda doctor
  • Shirodhara, a steady warm stream of medicated oil across the forehead, assessed case by case where thoughts keep racing
  • Abhyanga and a wind-down routine that removes the screen from the last 45 minutes of the day
  • Review at 3 weeks, and again at 6 weeks

Individual outcomes vary. We do not promise a number of hours of sleep, and we will not describe any of this as a cure.

Two rules we hold to

First, nobody is asked to stop a psychiatrist's prescription in order to start here. If it helps your treating doctor, we will put our plan in writing for them.

Second, anyone under 18 attends with a parent or guardian. Adolescent sleep problems usually involve the whole household, its dinner time, its screen habits and its exam pressure. The household has to be part of the plan for the plan to hold.

Ghorpadi is the full Panchakarma branch

Ghorpadi (Main) runs dedicated therapy halls and an in-house pharmacy, so Shirodhara and Abhyanga are performed here on-site rather than referred. Our Manjri Bk, Hadapsar branch is the second full Panchakarma facility. Wagholi consults and refers therapy cases. Kharadi and Viman Nagar run online consultations with medicine courier, which suits hostel students and anyone on a late shift.

Dr. Amruta Amrutkar (M.D. Ayurveda, 12+ years) consults for young women whose sleep tracks their cycle.
